Joseph Knox ES opened its doors to approximately 750 students on August 4, 2008, with Dr. Kelly Jo Brooks as the principal. The school name was selected due to its historic relevance in Cherokee County. Joseph Knox was the first school teacher in Cherokee County in 1834. His descendents have been important members of the educational process in Cherokee County and the State of Georgia. Knox family members have been employed by the school district in many capacities. The committee wanted the legacy of Joseph Knox, the first educator of Cherokee County, to live on for many years to come. The school mascot was selected because of what the meaning of the “knights” represented. Courtesy and manners were taught within knighthood at an early age. The committee agreed that teaching character quality words in the classroom would be a fun way to use the knight mascot. The school colors selected are navy blue and white. The school became a STEM Academy in 2018.
